At age 15, Lynda began to sing in the local pizza restaurant to earn extra money. 8 years later, at 16, Lynda joined two cousins in forming another bandcalled The Relatives. The drummer of the group was Gary Burghoff, an actor. The group was initially launched at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas. Carter had to enter the kitchen since she was younger than 21. She was voted "Most Talented" and decided to get into music. In 1970, Carter auditioned and then did a tour with The Garfin Gathering and bandleader Howard (Speedy) Garfin. Their first show together took place at the Holiday Inn Chinatown in San Francisco, which was so new , it didn't even have a sidewalk entrance. The hotel staff and hotel guests drove their cars into the underground parking garage , meaning that they were performing for their guests. The Garfin Gathering played shows in many Nevada casinos, including those situated between Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Reno. Carter decided to leave the Garfin Gathering in 1972 to pursue acting. She then went back to Arizona.
